Initial Begininngs

Hi! Welcome to the development blog for my short film about a vengeful beetle.

Before we start, it makes sense to add a little (WIP) synopsis so this all makes sense:

“A couple are walking along a track in park. Walking close to the edge of the track, they brush against a plant that housed a sleeping Grapevine beetle. The beetle falls and attempts to seek revenge for being rudely awoken.”

Where It Started

I think it was January (2023) when the idea for this short film came to mind. My partner and I were on our usual lunch-time walk when I noticed there were a lot of big beetles flying around our heads that would occasionally collide into the shrubs we walked by (which made a funny THWACK! noise).

I thought it was interesting that they flew so close to people walking, which prompted me to say something like “wouldn’t it be funny if these beetles were trying to attack us for for something we didn’t know we did?”. I can’t remember exactly what I said, but it was something similar to that.

I later realised that I had come across one of these beetles before back in January 2022, I had a video of one that lived in the pot soil of one of my soon-to-be-deceased avocado plants.

Long story short, I screenshot part of the video and used Google lens to figure out that it was a Grapevine beetle.
